On a guided tour by Linda Prospero at approximately 5,000 feet in the province of L’Aquila is the main attraction of GRan Sasso National Park: The ruins of Rocca Calascio and Santa Maria della Pieta. Rocca Calascio is a mountaintop fortress, the highest in the Apenmines, built of stone and masonary exclusively for military purposes and intended only to accommodate troops and never as residence for nobles, the fortress overlooks the Plain of Navelli at one of the highest points in the ancient Barony of Carapelle.
